Most contests are rarely judged on voice quality alone, but also consider
stage presence, audience reaction, entertainment value, and the ability to
stay on key.
Find the right songs. Select a song that is reasonably well known but not
overdone.
Songs that win contests are most often upbeat and fun. Slow songs and
ballads may showcase your vocal range but may backfire by putting your
audience to sleep. Use the qualifying weeks to try out new songs. If one
doesn't immediately get the crowd going, move on to another song. If you
can't find a new song, stick with the songs that have worked for you in
the past.
Do not pick a long song! Leave your audience wanting more. If you pick
a song that is over four minutes long, the judges will be looking at their
watches and not at you.
Make eye contact with the audience and judges. Try to learn your song
well, the fewer times you look for the lyrics on the monitor the better.
Once you decide on a song listen to it over and over again. If you cannot
find the original song on CD, you should be able to download it from the
Internet. Learn the song a little at a time. Listen to and practice the first
30 seconds of the song, then move on to the next. In no time you will
know your song forwards and backwards.
Move on stage. You don't have to have a choreographed dance routine
(although it could help) but any kind of movement goes a long way and is
far better than remaining stationary.
When getting dressed for your performance, remember that you will be
judged on your appearance as well as your performance.
Acknowledge your competitors with grace and dignity. Applaud them and
be courteous at all times. Bad sportsmanship is not a quality to display at
a competition.
Relax and have fun. Nerves can be a killer, so practice in front of friends
and family as often as you can.
Do not chew gum while you are singing. (I have actually seen this!)
A part of your score will be based on audience reaction. It is a good idea
to bring friends with you whenever you plan to compete in a karaoke
contest. At our semi-finals and finals, contestants must bring a minimum
of five people each.
